The Wildly Popular “Health Food” That is Mostly a Fraud

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Kastel, co-founder of The Cornucopia Institute, about their long-awaited and much-needed Yogurt Report. The interview took place at the recent Heirloom Seed Festival in Santa Rosa, CA, where we both had the honor of speaking.

The idea for the Yogurt Report was seeded about two years ago. I was out of town and a friend requested yogurt, so I went out looking for some in a local grocery store.

To my dismay, I couldn’t find a single healthy yogurt. They were all junk food disguised as “health food.” Previous to this experience, I was unaware of how truly degenerated most commercial yogurts had become. I believe this is really a strong case of deception, so I turned to The Cornucopia Institute. It required two years of investigation. If you’re eating yogurt to help optimize your gut flora, you need to review this report. Chances are you’re currently eating yogurt that has more similarities with candy than anything else…

Have You Been Deceived?

Most commercial yogurts are chockfull of artificial colors, flavors, additives, and sugar, typically as fructose (high fructose corn syrup), which actually nourishes disease-causing bacteria, yeast, and fungi in your gut. Since your gut has limited real estate, this smothers your beneficial bacteria and gets you sick.

Sugar also promotes insulin resistance, which is a driving factor of most chronic disease. Virtually all commercially available yogurts use pasteurized milk (heated at high temperature) even before it is reheated to make the yogurt itself, and this has its own drawbacks.

The top-rated yogurts are generally VAT pasteurized at relatively low temperatures, and are made from raw milk rather than previously pasteurized milk. While not as advantageous as making yogurt from raw milk in your own home, it’s certainly better than most commercial yogurt.

The report also took a look at the food industry’s labeling campaign, Live and Active Cultures, which is supposed to help consumers select products with high levels of healthy probiotics.

To assess probiotic content, Cornucopia tested yogurt purchased directly from grocery stores instead of following the industry’s practice of testing levels at the factory. As it turns out, many of the brands bearing the Live and Active Cultures label contain LOWER levels of probiotics than the top-rated organic brands in Cornucopia’s report and scorecard that are not part of the Live and Active campaign.

The report also includes a comparative cost analysis of commercial yogurt brands. The good news is that many organic yogurts are actually less expensive, on a price-per-ounce basis, than conventional, heavily-processed yogurts.

Cornucopia Files Complaint; Requests FDA Investigation

As noted in their press release announcing the release of the report:

“Based on its industry investigation, The Cornucopia Institute has filed a formal complaint with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking the agency to investigate whether or not certain yogurts on the market, manufactured by such companies as Yoplait, Dannon, and many store brands including Walmart’s Great Value, violate the legal standard of identity for products labeled as yogurt.

The Cornucopia Institute requests that the legal definition of ‘yogurt’ be enforced for product labeling, just as it is for products labeled ‘cheese.’

‘The reason that Kraft has to call Velveeta® ‘processed cheese-food’ is that some of the ingredients used, like vegetable oil, cannot legally be in a product marketed as ‘cheese’,’ Kastel added.

Cornucopia alleges that some of the ingredients that manufactures are using in yogurt, like milk protein concentrate (MPC), typically imported from countries like India, do not meet yogurt’s current legal standard of identity.”

Why You Need Probiotics

Your body contains about 100 trillion bacteria, mostly in your gut, which is more than 10 times the number of cells you have in your entire body. It’s now quite clear that the type and quantity of micro-organisms in your gut interact with your body in ways that can either prevent or encourage the development of many diseases.

A healthy microbiome is not only important for optimal digestion of food and absorption of nutrients, these bacteria also help your body produce vitamins, absorb minerals, aid in the elimination of toxins, and are responsible for a good part of your immune system and mental health, including your ability to resist anxiety, stress, and depression.

One recent study1, 2 discovered that yogurt containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus can help protect children and pregnant women against heavy metal poisoning.

As shown in earlier research, certain microorganisms are particularly efficient at binding to certain toxins and/or chemicals, including pesticides. Here, they found that L. rhamnosus had a preference for binding (and eliminating) mercury and arsenic.

According to the authors: “Probiotic food produced locally represents a nutritious and affordable means for people in some developing countries to counter exposures to toxic metals.” Probiotics also have dozens of other beneficial pharmacological actions,3 including:

Anti-bacterial Anti-allergenic Anti-viral Immunomodulatory
Anti-infective Antioxidant Antiproliferative Apoptopic (cellular self-destruction)
Antidepressive Antifungal Cardioprotective Gastroprotective
Radio- and chemo protective/TD> Up-regulates glutathione and certain glycoproteins that help regulate immune responses, including interleukin-4, interleukin-10, and interleukin-12 Down-regulates interleukin-6 (a cytokine involved in chronic inflammation and age-related diseases) Inhibits tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha inhibitor, NF-kappaB, epidermal growth factor receptor, and more

It’s also important to realize that your gut bacteria are very vulnerable to lifestyle and environmental factors. Some of the top offenders known to decimate your microbiome include the following—all of which are best avoided:

Sugar/fructose Refined grains Processed foods Antibiotics (including antibiotics given to livestock for food production)
Chlorinated and fluoridated water Antibacterial soaps, etc Agricultural chemicals and pesticides Pollution

Brain Health Is Strongly Tied to Gut Health

While many think of their brain as the organ in charge of their mental health, your gut may actually play a far more significant role. Mounting research indicates that problems in your gut can directly impact your mental health, leading to issues like anxiety and depression. For Example:

  • One proof-of-concept study5, 6 conducted by researchers at UCLA found that yogurt containing several strains of probiotics thought to have a beneficial impact on intestinal health also had a beneficial impact on participants’ brain function; decreasing activity in brain regions that control central processing of emotion and sensation such as anxiety.
  • The Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility7 reported the probiotic known as Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001 normalized anxiety-like behavior in mice with infectious colitis by modulating the vagal pathways within the gut-brain.
  • Other research8 found that the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus had a marked effect on GABA levels—an inhibitory neurotransmitter that is significantly involved in regulating many physiological and psychological processes—in certain brain regions and lowered the stress-induced hormone corticosterone, resulting in reduced anxiety- and depression-related behavior.

Previous studies have confirmed that what you eat can quickly alter the composition of your gut flora. Specifically, eating a high-vegetable, fiber-based diet produces a profoundly different composition of microbiota than a more typical Western diet high in carbs and processed fats.

This is part and parcel of the problem with most commercially available yogurts—they’re widely promoted as healthy because they contain (added) probiotics, but then they’re so loaded with ingredients that will counteract all the good that they’re basically useless… The negative effects of the sugar far outweigh any marginal benefits of the minimal beneficial bacteria they have. Remember, the most important step in building healthy gut flora is avoiding sugar as that will cause disease-causing microbes to crowd out your beneficial flora.

Surprisingly, Mark Kastel notes that some of the organic brands of yogurt actually contained some of the highest amounts of sugar! It’s important to realize that some yogurt can contain as much sugar as candy or cookies, which most responsible parents would not feed their children for breakfast. Artificial flavors are also commonly used.

You Can Easily and Inexpensively Make Your Own Yogurt

Your absolute best bet, when it comes to yogurt, is to make your own using a starter culture and raw grass-fed milk. Raw organic milk from grass-fed cows not only contains beneficial bacteria that prime your immune system and can help reduce allergies, it’s also an outstanding source of vitamins (especially vitamin A), zinc, enzymes, and healthy fats. Raw organic milk is not associated with any of the health problems of pasteurized milk such as rheumatoid arthritis, skin rashes, diarrhea, and cramps.

To find a local source of raw grass-fed milk, see While delicious as is, you could add a natural sweetener to it. Mark suggests whole food sweeteners such as raw organic honey or maple syrup, for example. You can also add flavor without sweetening it up by adding some vanilla extract, or a squirt of lime or lemon juice. Whole berries or fruits are another obvious alternative. Just be mindful not to overdo it, especially if you’re insulin or leptin resistant—and about 80 percent of Americans are.Your absolute best bet, when it comes to yogurt, is to make your own using a starter culture and raw grass-fed milk. Nourish Your Microbiome with Organic Yogurt for Optimal Health

Cultured foods like yogurt are good sources of natural, healthy bacteria, provided they’re traditionally fermented and unpasteurized. One of the best and least expensive ways to get healthy bacteria through your diet is to obtain raw milk and convert it to yogurt or kefir. It’s really easy to make at home. All you need is some starter granules in a quart of raw milk, which you leave at room temperature overnight.

By the time you wake up in the morning you will likely have kefir. If it hasn’t obtained the consistency of yogurt, you might want to set it out a bit longer and then store it in the fridge.

A quart of kefir has far more active bacteria than you’d obtain from a probiotic supplement, and it’s very economical as you can reuse the kefir from the original quart of milk about 10 times before you need to start a new culture pack. Just one starter package of kefir granules can convert about 50 gallons of milk to kefir! Cultured foods should be a regular part of your diet, and if you eat enough of them you will keep your digestive tract well supplied with good bacteria. There may still be times when a probiotic supplement is necessary, but for day-to-day gut health maintenance, yogurt and other traditionally cultured or fermented foods are truly ideal choices.

There’s a reason sleep deprivation is considered “torture” by the United Nations. Over time, lack of sleep can lead to a breakdown of the nervous system as well as severe physical and psychological damage.  Of course, in your day-to-day life, you likely don’t experience sleep deprivation to such an extreme…but not getting enough sleep over years will have the same effects. It simply happens more slowly.

Getting a good night’s sleep seems elusive in a world of artificial light, long work hours, and technology that we are connected to 24 hours a day.  Make no mistake, lack of sleep kills, it stresses you out, shortens your lifespan, and guess what? Women are 50% more likely to be sleep-deprived than men!

Consistent sleep deprivation leads to rapid aging, depression, and increases your risk of serious disease such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Let’s discuss how these three specific “rhythms” have been wired into your very core before your birth and regulate vital body functions:

  • Ultradian rhythms last less than twenty-four hours. Your heartbeat, digestive system, and the functions of your endocrine system – and its release of hormones – are all governed by ultradian rhythms.
  • Circadian rhythms are cycles that last approximately twenty-four hours. The most well-known example of this type of rhythm is your sleep cycle.
  • Infradian rhythms are those that last for longer than a day. A good example of the infradian rhythm is the female menstrual cycle.

When these basic rhythms are disrupted, your entire body will be thrown into chaos. For instance, workers who pull overnight shifts have a bodyweight that is 15% heavier on average than their co-workers who work during daylight hours. They are also more susceptible to major depression.

What Can You Do When The Deck Is Stacked Against You?

You might make empty promises yourself to get more sleep and yet it never seems to become a reality. I know, I know! Trust me, I’ve just landed in Australia and I’m busier than ever! Life is hectic and it is important to make restful sleep a priority for you to deal with the demands on your time and energy efficiently. There’s an old saying…work smarter, not harder.

Sleep enables better concentration, memory, and creates a positive mood immediately. By getting more sleep in the words of English dramatist Thomas Dekker, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.”  It will improve every aspect of your life. You need to change the way you look at sleep, consider getting enough sleep crucial to your health – because it is.

                                  7 Tips for Better Sleep

    1. Disconnect an hour before bed!
Between social media, cell phones, and the ability to record our favorite television shows to watch when we want, you are “attached” to technology around the clock.  One hour before bed, enable “do not disturb” on your phone, log out of social media, get away from the computer or television, and if you listen to music, select something calm and soothing, preferably without words. My angels (my team) are fond of this downloadable application called“Ambiance”, it has a variety of ambient sounds from waterfalls to white noise to help you relax.
    1. What you eat and drink makes a difference!
Caffeine, nicotine (tobacco), high-sugar treats, and alcohol “stir up” the body and stimulate inflammatory responses that should be winding down. Also don’t go to bed on a full stomach and don’t starve yourself either it will also distract you from getting a good night’s sleep. Curb your eating at least two hours before bed and choose water or herbal (caffeine free) tea to settle the digestive system.
    1. Get super cozy!
Throughout the day, even if it isn’t noticeable, we shed dead skin cells and sweat. A shower before bed cleans the skin and opens the pores. Choosing soft clothing that fits the way you like, adding socks if you tend to get chilled at night, and laying your head on your favorite pillow are little tricks to make sleep the wonderful experience it should be.

    1. Create a sleep oasis!

Your bedroom and your bed should be an oasis – a place you look forward to being in because it makes you feel positive and relaxed. The right color on the walls, the best mattress for you, a good darkness (and temperature) level while sleeping, and minimal noise can be the key to the best sleep you’ve had in years. If you can’t make huge changes, consider taking one project at a time to improve how you feel about your “sleep oasis” – you won’t regret it.
    1. Keep to a routine!
You might love staying up late and sleeping in on the weekends but if you’re having trouble sleeping, you need to keep to the same schedule every day of the week until your body becomes accustomed to getting the sleep it requires. Set an alarm every night to remind you to go to bed. Avoid the snooze button in the morning. Hitting the snooze button disturbs your circadian rhythms. Get up when it’s time for you to actually get up. Give sleep the importance it deserves.
    1. Get moving during the day!
Ten short minutes a day is enough to make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. Activities such as yoga and tai chi add an element of meditation to your exercise that is incredibly beneficial. When possible, try to take those ten minutes outside in the sunshine. It will boost your production of vitamin D, help you absorb calcium, and improve your mood.
  1. Settle your mind before slipping between the covers!
If you live a stressful or very busy life, the endless “tasks” you handle can distract you from getting rest. Two hours before bed, write a prioritized list for the following day then know you cannot do any of them until you rest. You might even want to take up journaling to express tension and worry you might not even realize you have. As you lie down, take the time to visualize positive things in your life and breathe deeply for several minutes.

You must give yourself “permission” to sleep. You need to know that you aren’t a slacker by accepting your need for sleep and allowing nothing to get in the way of getting it. The answer is not to boost your body artificially with caffeine, sleeping pills, or insist you can “get by” on very little sleep. The truth is: the only thing you’ll “get” without sleep is disease. You need sleep…make sure you get it.

AYURVEDA: Massage Ayurveda/Tantra

Ayurvedic Tantra massage is a of massage using Ayurvedic oil which helps the sexual energy to achieve a higher state of consciousness. Skilled Tantra Massage Therapists, especially Tantric Yogis, use specific sensual touches such as lightly running fingertips along the entire body to awaken a dormant energy field within the body. When awakened, this energy field is believed to unite lovers in an ecstatic experience and to get rid of/from physical and mental trauma. Tantric Massage is the best medicine for those who suffer from depression. This, is a very ancient healing art form from the mysterious land of India.

Tantra Massage sets out to unwrinkle blocked energy throughout the body and awaken the Kundalini, a mythological energy that lies in rest at the base of the spine. When the Kundalini rises from its restful state, it spreads out along the spine and precipitates healing throughout the body.

The goal of the Tantra Massage Therapist is to awaken the seven Chakras, or energy centers, along the spine of the body in an effort to nudge the sleeping Kundalini from its rest. The Tantric Massage begins with a relaxation massage and moves along into centralized Chakra energy building techniques, then accelerates into personalized Kundalini arousal techniques.

Sexual arousal is a major emotional impact of Tantra Massage. Like other forms of massage, Tantra Massage can be very relaxing. Tantra Massage can also alleviate physical pain and emotional fear and guilt. Tantra Massage will help the people to become more fulfilled and personally empowered.

HEALTH: Healing with Coloidial Silver

Colloidal Silver is the ultimate preparedness first aid product; more valuable than antibiotics in a collapse emergency

(NaturalNews) Every prepper knows about the benefits of colloidal silver. Used topically, colloidal silver kills bacteria, protecting wounds from infection. When taken internally, it accomplishes much the same thing, and I’ve personally seen it rescue someone from severe food poisoning during a hiking expedition in Peru.

Colloidal silver has, for over 15 years, been a crucial part of my own personal preparedness plan. I’ve collected silver products from half a dozen companies, plus three colloidal silver generators that I’ve acquired over the years. The generators, however, tend to create large particle size silver, which is not what you really want for long-term storage or regular use. Small particle size is best, and I’ve been looking for a colloidal silver manufacturer that could produce VERY small-sized silver.

The gel is an amazing product. It replaces all those store-bought antiseptic creams like Neosporin or “triple antibiotic ointment,” all of which are made with pharmaceutical chemicals. Sovereign Silver gel is not only safer and more natural, it’s also a substance that bacteria simply can’t become resistant against.

Even better, silver in suspension never expires. (The Sovereign Silver product, technically, is required by law to print a “use by” date on the product.) Colloidal silver simply doesn’t degrade with time alone. It lasts essentially forever, making it the ultimate preparedness investment for a lifetime of readiness.

Obviously, in a collapse scenario, all effective medicines will skyrocket in value. Colloidal silver may very well become worth its weight in gold. And as the hospitals run out of antibiotics, the population will be panicked to try to find something that really works against bacteria. This is where colloidal silver (Sovereign Silver) will be seen as a true lifesaving substance of extremely high value.

Small particle size means high potency

There are a lot of colloidal silver products on the market today, of course, and many of them are quite good. But Sovereign Silver has the smallest particle size of them all: 0.0008 microns.

A tiny particle size means more surface area and more absorbability. This is why Sovereign Silver is several times more potent than “common” colloidal silver, even while having just 10 ppm of silver. This is a hugely important point to grasp: Higher ppm does not mean a stronger product. In fact, due to the physics of colloidal silver generation, higher ppm actually means larger particle size and lower effective potency. At 10 ppm with 0.0008 micron particle size, Sovereign Silver is not only extremely effective, it’s also extremely safe. You can’t get “too much silver” drinking this 10 ppm solution unless you literally tried to chug hundreds of gallons of it each year. Technically speaking, you could take a single dose 7 times each day for 70 years and still not reach or exceed the EPA’s daily oral Silver Reference Dose (RfD) for lifetime exposure.

Pure ingredients, no additives

Another important difference when Sovereign Silver is that it’s made with 99.999% (five nines) pure elemental silver and purified water. There are no added silver salts or other compounds. This makes Sovereign Silver extremely safe, simple and pure.

It’s also packaged in a glass bottle to prevent any leaching from other containers such as plastic. When you use Sovereign Silver, you’re only getting what you want: Extremely small particle size, 10 ppm silver with a long history of safe, effective use.

The silver solution is, itself, free of bacteria. But even if it were contaminated during production, the silver inhibits bacteria growth inside the container, granting the product an essentially unlimited shelf life.

The only things that can degrade colloidal silver in a bottle are strong sunlight and heat, so you do want to store Sovereign Silver in a dark, cool location. As long as you don’t expose it to light and heat, silver will store indefinitely, without losing any potency whatsoever.

When and how to use colloidal silver

Topically, colloidal silver is the instant choice for use on minor cuts, scrapes, burns, abrasions and anything that you don’t want to get infected. It has been researched for use in burn wards, where it helps prevent the infections that tend to plague burn victims.

Now, obviously, if you have a serious life-threatening injury, get yourself to an emergency room, because western doctors are quite skilled at treating trauma. But for minor cuts, scrapes and even insect bites, colloidal silver is a wonderful first-line defense.

On the ranch in Texas where I raise dairy goats, I’ve used Sovereign Silver topically to help prevent and eliminate infections in our goats. I would also not hesitate to use it on my dog Roxy if she ever gets into another scrape with a raccoon.

In a preparedness scenario where medicine is hard to come by, colloidal silver can be used in place of almost any antibiotic, both for topical use and internal use. In fact, doctors will be ecstatic to find some colloidal silver once the pharmaceuticals all run out. Maybe this will even open their eyes to the reality that silver is the best replacement for antibiotics on the planet — a scientific fact that has been mercilessly suppressed by the medical establishment for decades.

Is colloidal silver appropriate for daily use?

Personally, I don’t see any reason to take colloidal silver daily. I look at it as an emergency first aid solution, not a daily supplement. I’m aware that some people are taking it daily, but I don’t see that as necessary in any way unless you’re specifically fighting something or expecting to be exposed to something.

Now, if you’re touring in Mexico, Central America or South America, I can understand taking it daily during the tour, just to help protect yourself from all the nasties in the food and water there. That makes good sense, and I always travel with colloidal silver for precisely this reason.

In terms of trace element nutrition, silver is not anywhere near the top of the most important trace elements you need to intake. Selenium and zinc, for example, are far more important in terms of overall health. And if you’re looking for sources of trace elements, there are a lot more affordable sources for trace silver than colloidal silver. Himalayan salt, for example, contains trace levels of 80+ elements, including silver. It’s a lot less expensive and it also provides trace levels of other elements beyond silver.

Is colloidal silver safe?

Predictably, the conventional medical system attacks colloidal silver with ridiculous scare stories that simply aren’t true. (They also attack vitamin C, by the way.) Keep in mind that the people who attack colloidal silver are the very same people who openly recommend that you should inject yourself with mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum and monosodium glutamate, all of which are additives the CDC openly admits are still added to vaccines.

So, to use their warped logic, drinking trace amounts of silver is dangerous, but INJECTING yourself with brain-destroying mercury and embalming fluid is perfectly safe!

Obviously, the medical establishment — which is dominated by criminal drug companies and corrupt government regulators — has zero credibility when it comes to commenting on nutrition or holistic medicine. Virtually all of Big Pharma’s science is completely faked and rigged, including most of the vaccine studies, as we’ve now learned from Big Pharma whistleblowers.

Colloidal silver cannot be patented, making it the very last thing the drug companies want people to learn about. It’s also orders of magnitude safer than prescription medications, which even the medical industry admits kill roughly 100,000 Americans each year. By contrast, there has never been a single death ever attributed to colloidal silver.

Remember: Trace levels of silver are consistently found in food and water, including whole grains, edible and medicinal mushrooms, milk, spring water, sea water and tap water. It’s even in human breast milk!

Colloidal silver is, without question, among the safest natural supplements ever created. It has a multitude of uses, an almost endless shelf life, and an inherent value in protecting human life, especially in any scenario where conventional medicine is in short supply. Preppers, survivalists and natural medicine enthusiasts are stocking up on colloidal silver right now, knowing full well that this is a potentially lifesaving substance that may play a crucial role in protecting communities from infectious disease during almost any crisis.

HEALTH: Oil Pulling

What is oil pulling?

“Oil pulling, or the practice of swishing oil around your mouth every day, has roots in Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic system of medicine that developed 3,000 to 5,000 years ago.” Huffington Post   The idea is to swish oil around in your mouth for up to 20 minutes to kill bacteria. It is said to “pull” bacteria out of crevices and into the oil.

Beneficial claims of oil pulling:

Frankincense    (from:

Frankincense oil has a long history in both medicinal and spiritual usage. This oil has been widely used across the world for many centuries. Traces of frankincense oil have been found in Ancient Egyptian tombs dating back as far as 1323 BC.

Considered to be a holy oil by Christian religions, frankincense oil was one of the gifts said to have been presented at the birth of Christ. This is also known as Oil of Lebanon or Olibanum Oil (Lis-Balchin, M. 2006. Page 194 ‘Aromatherapy Science: A Guide for Healthcare Professionals’).

What is Frankincense Oil?

Frankincense is a type of resin harvested from trees of the Boswellia genus. The Boswellia sacra is particularly known for the healing qualities of its frankincense oil, and also the fact that it can grow in extremely rocky and challenging environments. These hardy trees can grow out of almost bare rock, and this only enhances their mysterious and spiritual nature.

The Boswellia resin is harvested by tapping through the bark on the trunk (a process known as striping) up to three times a year. The sticky resin is left then to ooze out and dry. Once it has dried and hardened the resin is carefully harvested. These hardened resin pieces are known as ‘tears’. It is generally thought that opaque resins offer the very best quality frankincense oil, which is prized by the Catholic Church for ceremonial uses.

Once harvested the hard frankincense resin is then distilled to extract the highly fragrant oil. The green and pale resin tears can also be eaten raw. This is a very strong substance and so it must be ingested carefully. The recommended diluted is 10:1 in water, and in general frankincense oil is used as a flavouring to dishes like ice-cream or sweet pastries, rather than as a main ingredient.

Does Frankincense Work?

There has been a lot of research on traditional medicines in recent years. Scientists are looking into exactly what traditional medicines such as frankincense oil are made of, and how these compounds could provide benefits for the body. Research into frankincense oil has revealed that it contains the organic compounds ‘sesquiterpenes’. These have the important ability to break through the blood-brain barrier and so affect the brain tissue. In particular the sesquiterpenes found in frankincense oil have been shown to stimulate the area of the brain that controls feelings and emotions. This is a key discovery, as for centuries therapists and healers have used frankincense to balance and improve mood and positive thoughts. Sesquiterpenes have also been shown to affect the main glands of the body including the hypothalamus and pituitary. This could help to balance hormone production and promote a healthier immune system.

Frankincense oil has been shown to have an ORAC value of up to 630 µTE/100g. This is the standard measure used to describe the antioxidant capabilities of a substance. Antioxidants have been shown to reduce the risks of early aging and age-related diseases, and are highly recommended as part of a healthy lifestyle.

In recent years frankincense oil has been in the news as a possible weapon in the fight against cancer. Scientists have found that compounds such as sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes in the oil can delete corrupt DNA codes from cells, and potentially restore the correct information to recreate healthy cells and stop the spread of cancer. This research is still in the early stages, but does provide some exciting possibilities for the future treatment of many forms of cancer (Howell J, ‘Frankincense: Could it be a cure for cancer’. BBC World News. 2010).

Medicinal Uses Frankincense oil

Frankincense oil is widely available and can be used in many effective home remedies. This sweet smelling oil has a strong, warm and balsamic-like aroma. It has been used for centuries by healers and therapists, and has been attributed with the following healing properties:

  • Anti-catarrh
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-tumour
  • Anti-depressant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antiseptic
  • Immune system stimulating
  • Muscle relaxant

Frankincense Natural Remedies

Avoid using neat frankincense oil topically or orally as it is a strong essential oil. Always read manufacturer’s instructions and dilute before use. Here are just a few natural ways to use frankincense to heal and support the body:

  • Skin Care –frankincense oil is widely used for skin care. It has been shown to soothe burns, inflammation, rashes, cuts and sores. To make your own soothing frankincense cream just add a few drops of good quality oil to an unscented base body lotion, facial cream, shower gel or liquid soap. You could also just add it to boiled water that has been completely cool, and use it as a toner and refresher.
  • Relaxant – frankincense oil has a warm and uplifting aroma perfect for aiding relaxation. You can add a few drops to a base massage oil (such as sweet almond oil), or simply add a few drops to your bath water. Whilst mediating many people like to warm frankincense oil on a special essential oil burner and inhale the fragrant scent to aid relaxation.
  • Sore Muscles and Joint Pain – frankincense scented massage oil provides a warming rub for tired and sore muscles, and joint pain. You can also fill a bowl with warm water, add a few drops of massage oil and then soak a clean cloth. Squeeze this out and then place over sore muscles to create a soothing compress. Alternate with a cloth soaked in cool water for a hot/cold treatment.
  • Stomach Problems – frankincense oil has been closely linked with treatments of stomach problems for centuries. Green frankincense resin is particularly prized for treating stomach disorders. This is made by soaking green frankincense resin pieces in fresh water overnight, and drinking a small amount each morning.   Drink sparingly as frankincense is a very strong ingredient. Green frankincense is quite rare and must be kept completely out of the sunlight to preserve its special qualities. Alternatively you can buy a hydrosol version of frankincense, also distilled from the resin. This can be diluted 10:1 in water and drunk sparingly as a tea to relieve ulcers, reflux and nausea.
  • Emotional Imbalance – frankincense is one of the key essential oils used to treat emotional imbalance. The warm, relaxing and uplifting scent has been used to support the body and mind through spiritual and emotional difficulties for centuries. This can be applied as massage oil or through inhalation using essential oil burners. Many people with nervous conditions find it helpful to add a drop of frankincense to a base lotion. This can then be applied to the hands, wrists or temples to help calm nerves in difficult situations.

Frankincense oil is a valuable addition to any home medicine cabinet. It has been shown to provide a wealth of healing and supporting effects on the mind and body. The warm, uplifting scent can help to balance mood and create a positive atmosphere to rest and recharge in. Frankincense is widely available as an oil, resin or hydrosol.

DIY Natural Flea Powder for Pets

Homemade Flea Powder Recipe:

1 cup Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth

1/2 cup Neem Powder

1/2 cup Yarrow Root Powder

20 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil* *Do not use for cats.

Mix all ingredients together and put in a shaker top container. I used a mason jar with a shaker top lid (I got my mason jar shaker top lid at Christmas Tree Shop, but you could make your own by drilling holes in a regular mason jar lid).

Apply from head to tail along your pets spine in dry conditions. Brush your pets fur going the opposite direction so the powder comes in contact with the skin. Avoid the eyes and nose. Rub the powder on the belly and legs. Try to get the flea powder on as much skin as you can.

I have found that brushing the fur in the opposite direction and applying the flea powder with a cosmetic puff (like THIS) works really well. I also found the fleas seem to like the tail, the area right above the tail and the belly/groin area so I made sure to pay extra attention to those areas to get them well covered.  How often to apply flea powder?

To use this as a general repellent (with no serious flea infestation), applying once a month during active flea season (end of spring/summer) is sufficient. If the pet gets a bath or gets wet, it will need to be reapplied.
